La città di Cosenza e il futuro Museo di Alarico sul Times Europe

06 lug 13 L’attenzione dedicata dalla prestigiosa testata internazionale Times Europe al progetto dell’Amministrazione comunale di Cosenza, relativo alla realizzazione di un museo sulla storia e sulla leggenda di Alarico e del suo tesoro, conferma la qualità di un’idea e di un’intuizione storica e culturale. Le identità storiche sono le risultanti di processi complessi, evolutivi, di eventi non sempre gioiosi. Anzi, è spesso la sofferenza a caratterizzare il Dna culturale di una comunità. Il Re Alarico è e resta, con il suo carico di misteri, di leggende, di violenza, un evento importante della storia della città di Cosenza. Rimuoverla, come qualche esegeta suggerisce di fare, significa rinnegare la propria identità. Imputarci una volontà di sfruttamento del brand Alarico, significa offendere la nostra storia. L’esecutivo Occhiuto, al contrario, intende esaltare la storia locale anche nei suoi momenti più controversi, attraverso quello che Hegel definirebbe la consapevolezza di sé, con la semplicità e la naturalezza di una comunità che ama il suo passato e che non ha paura delle sue ombre. Cosenza è una città social, cool&trendy, cattolica, inclusiva. Non ha paura di Alarico e del suo tesoro. “Uniamoci – è in sintesi il messaggio del sindaco Mario Occhiuto – e crediamo nella forza delle nostre idee, celebriamoci, incoraggiamoci. Basta con le coscienze infelici del materialismo dialettico. E se il ‘Times Europe’ decide di parlare di noi e del nostro progetto significa che siamo davvero una città europea. Una città da visitare. Da vivere. Un tesoro di città. Con buona pace di Re Alarico”.

A row has broken out in Italy over plans to build a museum honouring Alaric the Barbarian, the Visigoth king responsible for the Sack of Rome in AD410.
The Calabrian city of Cosenza, where Alaric died after marching south to invade Africa, gave the go-ahead this week to demolish an hotel to make way for the museum. The former Hotel Jolly, a 1950s eyesore, sits on a prime site next to the river where Alaric is said to be buried along with the plundered treasure of Ancient Rome. It is to be replaced with a €7 million (£6 million) museum celebrating the Visigoth invader. A local historian is protesting, however, that the plan is akin to honouring Hitler. “It’s absurd that we celebrate someone who massacred Roman citizens,” Antonio Battista Sangineto, who teaches at the University of Calabria, said. “I can’t think of any other example where an old invader is celebrated.” Alaric, who was born in AD370 in what is now Romania, served as a commander of Gothic troops in the Roman army before turning against his masters and invading Italy. On August 24, 410, after besieging Rome for a third time, he entered the city when the Salarian Gate was opened for him, apparently by collaborators inside. “Eleven hundred and sixty-three years after the foundation of Rome, the Imperial city, which had subdued and civilised so considerable a part of mankind, was delivered to the licentious fury of the tribes of Germany and Scythia,” Edward Gibbon wrote. It was the first time the Eternal City had been captured by a foreign power for eight centuries, and it delivered one of the final blows to the Roman Empire. Laden with treasure, the rapacious Goths moved south along the Appian Way with the ambition to conquer the grain basket that was Africa. The march failed and Alaric died in Cosenza later that year. According to legend, local prisoners were forced to divert the Busento river to dig his tomb. The 6th-century Roman bureaucrat Jordanes described the burial in De origine actibusque Getarum (The Origin and Deeds of the Goths). “They led a band of captives into the midst of its bed to dig out a place for his grave. In the depths of this pit, they buried Alaric together with many treasures, and then turned the waters back into their channel. And that none might ever know the place, they put to death all the diggers.” Mr Sangineto is appalled that Cosenza, which already has a social club, a lab and a pizzeria named after Alaric, would honour a man whose burial led to the execution of dozens of local men. “They want to take advantage of the ‘Alaric’ brand — just because a few dozen German tourists come to see where Alaric is meant to be buried,” he said. He noted that Heinrich Himmler once visited for precisely that reason. The Mayor, Mario Occhiuto, defended the project. “It does not mean to celebrate Alaric as a bloodthirsty plunderer but rather to piggyback on the legend of the famous buried treasure,” he said.
